From Box Hill to Everest within 24 hours!

What is Everesting?

Hells 500 are the creators and custodians of the everesting concept. It’s a simple concept, but a fiendishly difficult ride to complete. Pick any climb, anywhere in the world and ride repeat after grinding repeat until you have notched up 8,848m. In one ride.

No time restriction, no distance requirement, no sleep allowed. This approach is all about finding the boundaries of what is possible in a single ride.


On Friday 29th May, my partner Jonathan and I took on this challenge along with 17 other mad fools. Our challenge was to cycle 225 miles over 67 ascents (and descents) of the iconic Box Hill in Surrey in order to climb the height of Mount Everest.

We started our mission at 5am Friday morning and cycled day and night to reach the peak of Mount Everest just before 4:30 Saturday morning, stopping only for food, drink and the occasional change of clothes! We were the largest group in the UK to ever complete this challenge, with 12 of the 19 starters successfully finishing.

This was certainly the hardest thing we have ever done and we have all earned a place as Hells 500 cyclists on the Everesting website (only 470 have ever completed this in the WORLD, of whom only 35 are female with just four females over the age of 45).

Jonathan and I were raising money for Nepal (which seemed rather fitting!) and are grateful to everyone who has sponsored us (not too late to SPONSOR US HERE please). Thanks also go out to those who gave words of encouragement, words of “are you mad” and those who even turned up in the evening to cheer us on in the freezing cold! Read on for a quick summary of my highs the lows and the stats…

The Highs

  • Seeing supporters at the top of the hill
  • Our faithful support team
  • No punctures
  • Lights working on single battery charge all through the night (and during rain)
  • Changing into dry clothes (except shoes) once rain had FINALLY finished
  • A rainbow
  • The dawn chorus
  • Coming second overall and being the only female to take part
  • For Jonathan being the first finisher!

The Lows

  • Knowing that even once 60 ascents was reached, there was still 2 hours of cycling to go!
  • The rain – from around 11am to 3pm
  • Getting soaked during the torrential downpour – despite having good waterproofs and overshoes
  • Thunder, lightning and hailstones
  • The cold, 4° c through most of the evening and night. We were still cold despite wearing our full winter gear!
  • The volume of traffic and bad driving over this beauty spot (because of a road closure the other side)
  • Garmin crashed at c.185 miles but I managed to continue recording on my phone and combine the GPS files
  • Finishing second to Jonathan by around 40 mins

Well there’s a surprise – I managed to describe more highs than lows!!

The Stats

  • Number of ascents – 67
  • Number of descents – 67
  • Total metres climbed – 9,127 ish or 11,320 according to Strava but I think the first figure is more accurate – after all we needed to do only 8848!
  • Distance ridden – 363km (225 ish miles)
  • Elapsed time – 23:24:35 (started just after 5am on 29th, finished just before 4:30am on 30th)
  • Moving time – 20:11:42
  • Rest / Faffing time (e.g. changing out of wet clothes) – 3hrs 13mins
  • Avg moving speed – 11.2mph
  • Max temp – 21° c
  • Min temp – 4° c
  • Number of owls heard during the night – 3

  • Speed – at one point my Garmin recorded 284.5 mph which has messed up the graph
  • Heart rate – my heart didn’t stop at c.175 miles in – Garmin crashed so had to continue recording using phone with no heart rate monitor
